Arunachala: sacred mountain of Ramana Maharshi. A visit to the ashram and surrounding areas

Drove on Monday afternoon with Melissa to visit Thiruvanamalai, the village surrounding Arunachala. Assunta follows with Yeshoda on Friday.

Went into shock, having been here 17 years ago, to see how things have changed, and to encounter the heavy traffic on the way to, and just in front of, the ashram. Especially the heavy trucks racing through, and by.

In fact, sadly we came upon someone on the street (already a crowd had gathered to help him), who had probably been hit by traffic --it certainly looked that way, as he was lying in the middle of the street --traffic now obviously stopped. Many people gathered around to help, so we continued on. A sobering sight, i hope he was not badly injured (he looked sort of o.k.)

then, further distresing information volunteered by our driver, that the road to Thiruvanamalai will be widened in the near future, to 4 lanes. This will mean the destruction of countless huge old thick-trunked trees that grace the side of the road now, not to mention the displacement of countless homes and people.

The road IS in horrible condition, and something does need to change. But cut down thousands of trees?? Disrupt thousands of lives?? I don't know...have to get off the internet now...more later. Going to ashram now. Namaste, Saraswati
